In the past months I have studied digital modelling for database design. My point of departure was a data model for the lifecycle management of utility networks developed as part of the ReDUCE programme. This data model is called the Operation & Maintenance Domain Ontology and was designed to facilitate the exchange of O&M data between systems with different storage schemas. Another use for this data model is to derive a database that can be used to store, manipulate, analyze, and present utilities’ data. I focused on the latter use, and thus, created a spatial-relational database schema and installed a prototype database for testing. I populated it with two utility networks belonging to the campus of the University of Twente and with polygonal features representing streets. I did the testing to show the support that the model offers during a street reconstruction, in terms of:

(a) capability to identify rich attribute information about components,

(b) information about component performance and maintenance history,

(c) identifying the characteristics of the surrounding soil and groundwater, and

(d) supporting topological analyses to, for example, locate critical valves.
